Recently, when the sky has been clear just before it gets light, there has been a planet visible low down over in the East. It really is bright and shiny. This morning I remembered that Rob has some very good binoculars so I got them out (dusted them off) and had a look. I was amazed to see that there were craters visible on the surface. Does anyone know which planet I can see?

Can't be the moon, too small. Can't be Venus, thats covered in cloud. There's noe craters on Mars. Are you sure that you are in the same Galaxy as me? I can't see anything.
Well, you never realy mentioned the size...I guess the Moon
Keith: I know it's not the moon, everyone is teasing me about that. Perhaps we get different stars here in france?
Karen: No, no, not the moon!
Uranus?
Anji, type in.. the night sky, september. search, then click on the first item.
John G - Just did that, and it looks like it IS Mars.
Anji - That must be some pair of binoculars you've go there! Did Rob nick them from a German U-Boat? They reckon that they were the most powerful ones ever made. (But they still lost the war at sea didn't they? "But, mein Kapitan, I didn't see them coming ...."
I really must give up the booze.... my mind runs away with me.
John and Keith: Thank you both for doing the research for me. The binoculars are Prinz puchased in May 82, we hardly ever use them and the receipt is still in the box. It says 10X50 and field 5-3°, does that mean anything to you? they cost £15.99.
Where we live we can see where the u-boats left from without binoculars!
