Which laptop?

Olivier is trying to choose a laptop. He can afford one after working all summer, but he’s agonising over which one. Most of his friends aren’t too helpful because their parents have paid for theirs, so they don’t see the problem from the same perspective. He doesn’t want one that is too big as he will be travelling with it and taking it to lectures, etc. He doesn’t want a really small one either. He wants to have a coupe of games on it just in case. After sales is important to him after taking his ipod back three times before they gave him a new one.

What kind of laptop did you choose? Why? Are you satisfied with it?

I don't have a laptop, but I go Mac all the way. They are a bit pricey.

I'm a Windows User, admin, and consultant. The Macs have their place and are more than suitable or even preferred for many specific uses. I personally use Dell's as do most of my customers and my business. You cannot argue with their post sales support if you pay for it up front. And, when they are on sale, the costs are usually about the lowest you can get in the market for complete systems. They work well for me and mine for the price.

I am using since years Hewlett Packard Pavilions. They are great and reliable. After 5 years now, mine got a bit slow. As I am on the move all the time, weight is an issue. Now I use two mini notebooks.

Hewlett Packard 2133 (now the 2140 is available) and Acer Aspire One. They both are great, weigh just over 1 kilo, have a 130 Giga har disk. The only inconvenience is that they don't have a DVD drive. Because of their size. But then, games can be downloaded.

I've got a big Dell laptop for normal use, and it's too big for lugging around. So I got a Dell Mini 9 for ultra-portable stuff, because it looked stronger and better-looking than the other netbooks. It is a very nice looking machine, and it slips easily into my bag, but it runs Windows and is EXCRUCIATINGLY slow (should have got Linux, no doubt). If I did it again I'd gt a Dell Mini with maximum specs for hardware and grit my teeth and go Linux.

Hi Anji
Mine is made of wood(like my brain)
Has paint on it.
Uses a brush & not a keyboard.
I hope Oliver enjoys his new laptop as much as I have mine!
Have a great week
Love
Debbie

Thank you all for your help. It looks like he's getting a Samsung - We will know for sure when we go shopping next week.

Hi Anji,

I would suggest Dell Inspiron 1440 and Olivier can choose whatever color he likes. Following are the specs of the one i bought a couple of weeks back and i am dell fan from the very begining.

-Inspiron 14 Inch Notebook (Inspiron 1440)
-Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic Edition SP1
-720P Bright, Glossy, widescreen 14.0 inch WLED display
-8X CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
-3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz
-Size: 320GB1 SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
-Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
-High Definition Audio 2.2
-Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card
-48 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
-Intel® Pentium™ Dual Core T4200 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/1MB cache)

It cost me around US $ 900.

Best Regards,
Tech Gurru
