One of life's mysteries

A couple of weeks ago I had to pick up something that I’d ordered online. As our local shop was on holiday I went to the florists in the next village. There was quite a queue, mainly people picking up parcels – not buying flowers. I didn’t mind waiting amongst the flowers and the plants.

Then I realized, I couldn’t smell the scent of a single flower! Is it because they are grown in poly-tunnels or do they just sell flowers with no perfume nowadays?

I cannot tell in your case but I smell flowers here whenever I pass by a florist. Lately I received many flowers as we ended up this semester and all of them have scent.

Whenever that happens to me I blame it on having lost my sense of smell. I hope I'm right.
You are too young though for that to have happened.

Ellena: Nice to meet you! Yes, I still have a sense of smell. It seems that the flowers have lost their sense of perfume!

Our local flower shop only sells artificial flowers and arrangements, and there is always the smell of freshly baking bread in there. It's because the bakery is right next door!

Keith: This one is across the road from a supermarket = petrol fumes mainly.
