Mrs Bidery’s spidery bedroom

As I was closing the shutters one night last week I noticed several small spiders on the curtains and window. Looking around they were on the walls and along the angle where the ceiling meets the wall. Not nice, but they were small enough not to panic me. I decided to vacuum them up. One or two that had tried to escape onto the ceiling dropped onto the bed. Needless to say I vacuumed the whole room, floors and walls before going to bed. The next night there were a few and the night after, just one or two.

This morning I had to vacuum around the computer, there were four or five hanging around. I wonder if they are drawn by the wifi – or perhaps they like me?

I like spiders. They eat flies, and they make pretty webs. But I prefer them outdoors because they are bitey little critters!

When I do the cleaning for a rural friend, I hoover up loads and loads and loads of spiders and insects. I imagine them trying to come to terms with their new hoover bag world, and forming escape committees and so on, but never managing to escape. It's really v sad, a bit like those descriptions of the Bastille and the Chateau d'If in Dumas, but without the hero. Hm, The Spider of Monte Cristo? The Three Spiders?

Just lucky, I'd say. Spiders in the bedroom make me nervous.

You hoover up spiders? The horror! Are you some sort of terrorist in the world of small creatures? I think they're sweet. Sort of. Sometimes.

Oh I would have vacuumed them up too!!! My husband is more afraid of spiders then I am but I always scream for him when I see a big spider.

Veronica: I like them too. we have a spider here with very long thin legs which is hopeless at spinning webs, it just makes a messy tangle, it walks around as if it's been drinking...

Dru: Someone told me that they live for a long time inside the vacuum cleaner; I just hope that the one I sucked up yesterday evening doesn't ever escape. have you read Colette's 'Rainy moon and other spiders'?

Cas: I can't sleep until they're out of the way.

Graham: Very sweet but not in the bedroom. In the garden we have gorgeous little pink crab spiders

Itchin' Stitchin: My husband is no use whatsoever when it comes to spiders and other creepy crawlies. My daughter is very brave but not always here.
